Powerball: Separate Pools and Jackpot Odds

Powerball has two separately selected sets, so a ticket is not an unordered six-number choice from a combined pool. The same numeric label may appear in the main set and the Powerball set because they belong to different pools.

How the jackpot odds are calculated

C(69,5) × C(26,1) = 292,201,338. With uniform unordered selections and independent separate pools where applicable, one exact ticket has probability 1/292,201,338. The exact BigInt count matches the reviewed official jackpot denominator.

Static result: 1 in 292,201,338; official match.

Why the second pool multiplies the count

There are 11,238,513 unordered main-number sets. Each can be paired with any of the 26 Powerballs. Picking a favorite Powerball does not reduce the outcomes the draw can produce. Multiplying the main-set count by 26 gives the full jackpot outcome space.

The official overall odds concern any prize, including lower tiers. They answer a different question from the chance of matching the jackpot. We do not add or round prize-tier probabilities to invent an expected payout. A jackpot amount, a cash option and a taxed net receipt are also different values.

Powerball: the numbers behind the odds

Ticket format
5 of 69 + 1 of 26
Calculated vs official odds
Calculated 1 in 292,201,338 (≈ 3.422 × 10^-9). Official 1 in 292,201,338 (Powerball prize chart, reviewed 2026-10-14). Equal.
Official odds of any prize
1 in 24.87 (Powerball prize chart, reviewed 2026-10-14). Published approximate figure for winning a prize of any tier, not the jackpot chance.
1,000 distinct tickets
cover 1,000 of 292,201,338 outcomes (about 1 in 292,201); duplicates add nothing.
One-number neighbours
320 tickets (5 × 64: choose which of your 5 main numbers to replace, and which of the 64 unused numbers replaces it) differ from yours in exactly one main number, other pools unchanged. With yours they cover 321 of 292,201,338 outcomes (about 1 in 910,284). This counts ticket combinations; a different ticket is not a likelier one.
One fixed ticket, 1,000,000 independent draws
expected jackpot hits 0.00342 (1,000,000 ÷ 292,201,338); chance of at least one hit 0.342% (1 − (1 − 1/292,201,338)^1,000,000). Exact calculation, not a played or simulated result.

Calculated values assume equally likely combinations, drawing without replacement and independent pools; prizes, taxes, ticket costs and rule changes are not modelled. None of this predicts real draws or recommends buying tickets.

What understanding the odds can and cannot do

Balanced selections, birthdays and past draw frequencies do not improve the jackpot chance of a particular valid ticket. LottoFlick does not predict winning numbers. Use the combination calculator to explore models and the Explorer to compare field scopes.
